Pagdin, Khamborn take Sea Pines Junior Heritage

Fai Khamborn and Joseph Pagdin both claimed the top spot at the beautiful Harbour Town Golf Links and can now add 2017 Sea Pines Junior Heritage championship titles to their respective resumes.

Khamborn, who attends the International Junior Golf Academy in Bluffton, SC, followed up her first round performance with a stellar round of one under par 70, a one over par total of 144 on the challenging PGA Tour venue.  Highlights of her round include a bogey free front side for a two under par 34, carding birdies on the par 5 fifth and short par four ninth hole.  She continued that run into the back nine, making two more birdies to help even out the three bogeys to finish at one under on the day.  “This week I really had fun and really enjoyed the golf courese,” exclaimed Khamborn as she accepted her Harbour Town Lighthouse replica trophy.

Baylee Evans of Lancaster, SC battled through her round today, coming second place seven strokes behind Khamborn but three shots clear of the rest of the field at eight over par 151.  Finishing in third was Norman, Oklahoma’s own Kaitlin Milligan at 11 over par 154.

Pagdin, an Orlando, FL resident, was the only player to finish under par for the tournament to earn his title of Sea Pines Junior Heritage Champion.  After a great round at the wind stricken Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love, III on Saturday, Pagdin held steady and shot a solid final round of one over par 72.  “The key was probably the up-and-down for par on the final hole,” Pagdin commented.  After making only two birdies on the day and three bogeys, Pagdin found himself in the rough right of the 18th green nestled up against the collar.  He pitched it up and over a mound, pitching it to six feet below the hole and drained the par putt – which ultimately lead him to the winner’s circle.

Shiso Go of Bluffton, who has had some strong finishes in this event, continued his streak and finished the tournament at even par 143 after burning the edge of the cup,  missing a 25 foot birdie putt on the final hole to force a play-off.  Michael Sanders of Davidson, NC held strong through the day, finishing third just two shots off the leader at 144 for the tournament.  First day leader, Tyler Gray of Lugoff, SC, carded a seven over par 78 and finished in sixth place.

FINAL RESULTS:  BOYS | GIRLS

Gray, Khamborn Grab Early Leads

Tyler Gray (Lugoff, SC) lead a contingent of only four players to shoot under par during the opening round of the 2017 Sea Pines Junior Heritage at the newly renovated Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love, III. His four under par 68 was an outstanding round in the chilly and blustery conditions. Fai Khamborn (Bluffton, SC) raced to the front of the girls’ field as she carded a two over par round of 74. Khamborn holds a three shot advantage heading into the final round on the famed Harbour Town Golf Links on Sunday, while Gray sits on a one shot cushion.

Gray made his round rather exciting throughout the day. His front nine included four birdies, three bogeys and only two pars, while the second nine included an eagle, double bogey and three birdies to post his tournament low of 68. “It was an overall good round. Didn’t make any bad mistakes, didn’t do anything wrong,” Gray commented. Michael Sanders (Davidson, NC) matched Gray on the second nine posting a three under 33 and but coming up one stroke short heading into the final round. The other two players under par include Shiso Go (Bluffton, SC), who lead after day one in the 2016 Sea Pines Junior Heritage, and Joseph Pagdin (Orlando, FL) who both sit two shots off the lead at two under 70.

Khamborn fired three birdies on the day but five bogeys during her round, carding an opening round two over par. Reflecting on her round, Khamborn noted, “it was pretty cold, I just told myself ‘play your game’ shot by shot.” Numerous players are on the heels of Khamborn, only three shots back at five over 77 including Baylee Evans (Lancaster), Tracy Lee (Howey-in-the-Hills, FL), Claire Hodges (Sorrento, FL) and Kathleen Sumner (Daniel Island, SC).

The final round will be hosted by Harbour Town Golf Links. The event is conducted by the SCJGA and the Sea Pines Resort. Titleist, Foot Joy, and the Heritage Classic Foundation are vital partners of this championship along with Coca Cola.

Onishi Comes From Behind to Claim Sea Pines Junior Heritage

Kaito Onishi (Bradenton, FL) had the round of the day to claim the Championship.  In wind gusted up to 25 miles an hour and temperatures hovered at 45 degrees, Onishi was able to fire the only round of even par. His two day total of 145 was one shot clear of J.J. Gresco (Scottsdale, AZ) and Doc Redmond (Raleigh, NC ) who both finished three over par.  Day one leader, Shiso Go (Bluffton) was six over par on his last six holes to let the title slip out of his grasp, finishing two off the pace at four over for the tournament.

Moosa Goes Wire to Wire

Blustery and cold conditions greeted the field at Harbour Town Golf Links for the final round of the 2016 Sea Pines Junior Heritage.  Madison Moosa (Charlotte, NC) held onto her first day lead to claim the Championship.  Conditions were extremely tough on the 84 competitors as wind gusted up to 25 miles an hour and temperatures hovered at 45 degrees.

Moosa birdied the short par four ninth hole for the only birdie on her opening nine.  Bogies on 11 and 12 allowed the field to get as close as six strokes but never any closer.  Gracyn Burgess (Lexington, SC) made a charge and posted 78 over the difficult layout.  Moosa held on in the tough conditions to win by seven shots.

Local Nimmer Claims Title

After 36 holes of very competitive golf on two world class venues, Bryson Nimmer of Bluffton sat atop the leaderboard at even par, 143.  Joining him ahead of the field was local resident Andrew Orischak.  Both players were within three shots of the lead after day one.  Nimmer sat one shot back at even par and Orischak three back at two over.  When the scorecards were turned in, Orischak posted a two-under par, bogey free round of 70.  Nimmer made it interesting, posting a bogey and three birdies in the final five holes, including holing out for birdie from the greenside bunker on the final hole.

Nimmer and Orischak proceeded to head to the par-four 18th hole once all the scores had been turned in to start their playoff.  Nimmer stuck an eight iron inside of six feet on his approach shot and made the birdie putt to claim his title, joining the likes of many PGA Tour players who have been champions of The Sea Pines Junior Heritage!

The event is hosted by The Sea Pines Resort and competed over Harbour Town Golf Links for the first round. The final round was contested on the Pete Dye designed Heron Point course, Sunday, February 8.  Two talented players will walk away with the Lighthouse Trophies befitting of their respective championships. The SC Junior Golf Association would like to recognize The Sea Pines Resort for presenting and hosting this prestigious event along with Nike Golf, Coca-Cola, and the Heritage Classic Foundation for making this must play tournament.

The 2015 Sea Pines Junior Heritage consisted of an 84 player field.  Six players were derived from local qualifying and the rest of the field was set with 78 invited players.  Thirteen states and multiple countries were represented in the 24th edition of the nationally renowned junior championship.

2015 Results – Girls

Perfect weather conditions greeted the field for the final round of the 24th Sea Pines Junior Heritage played at the Pete Dye designed Heron Point Sunday. Defending champion Ana Paula Valdes claimed her second straight title.

Valdes, started the final round one shot back of day-one leader Annika Bovender of Mt. Pleasant.  Valdes finished strong with a one-under par 35 on the back nine at Heron Point.  What was equally as strong was Bovender making a birdie on the final hole to push the competition into a playoff, also on 18.  A wayward tee shot for Bovender, left her scrambling and unable to make par.  Meanwhile, Valdes made a routine two-putt par and repeated as Junior Heritage Champion.

Huskey captures 2014 Sea Pines Junior Heritage.

Keenan of Greenville, SC captured the boy’s division on the first hole sudden death over Ben Schlottman of Advance, NC.

Huskey, a high school senior, started the day poorly with a pair of opening bogies. Two-over-par after two holes was not what he envisioned when he stepped on the first tee one shot behind the leaders.

Despite the early nerves, he settled down and all that washed away with an eagle three on the par five fifth hole. From there he made five straight pars before jumping into a share of the lead with back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th.
